Almost $1.2 million was awarded to 21-year-old Lhyvann Felipe last week by a jury in Miami-Dade County for injuries sustained from a batting machine that shot a ball at his groin at 60 miles per hour.
He was 19 at the time of the incident, at the Sluggers batting cage, located in West Miami-Dade at Tamiami Park. The park has been found liable for improper employee supervision. Sluggers owner Remberto Sanchez had no comment on the decision.
He was struck when he returned to the batting cage on orders of the employee to help pick balls up. That is when the machine, which had no lights on and whose cycle was already complete, shot the ball at him.
